This 1930's house on Philadelphia's "Main Line"' was modelled on designs published in "Country Life." The landscape garden reflects the early 20th century designs of Gertrude Jeckyl.

 

The client's brief, to double the square footage and radically alter the internal circulation of the house was demanding.

Extending an existing bay, excavating below ground level whilst maintaining the bay's existing roof line ensured a sympathetic extension in scale with the existing Arts & Crafts house.

The new 'informal' rear entrance to the house with a loggia and mud room extension brought the house into keeping with 21st century living.

 

The new triple garage, pool, hot tub and changing rooms created a relaxed courtyard atmosphere. The pool's waterfall feature was a bonus. The interior showcases exceptional furniture from the 1920's - 1960's, a collection curated by Nan Lee.

While Jonathan as architect designed the essential 'skeleton', determining the comfort, lighting and adapted circulation 'flow', Nan Lee, the interior designer, provided the luxuries of color, lighting, fabric and furnishings.
